"Many thanks indeed for magazine, It will be appreciated by a dozen or so of my friends. Calborn's Circulating Library is a standing joke in one quarter in particular. I am posting this on my way to Fishponds & within three minutes after doing this I shall pass Hannah More's birthplace.
I did enjoy Ely. To a lover of architecture it is a feast. This view of the cathedral shows work dating from 1085 to 1500. Transept. 1080(crossed out) 1100 to 1107. West tower (part showing just above roof) 1189—97. Top part of ditto 1401. Lady Chapel (on extreme right) 1321—49. East window of Lady Chapel 1373. East End of main building 1235—52. Lantern tower (octagon in centre) 1322 tp 1342. Big windows low down in E. End. One 1500 the other 1534.
The Lady Chapel surpassed everything I have seen for workmanship. It is badly damaged & it is estimated that to restore the inside to it original condition would cost £100,000. It is a profusion of the most exquisite carving imaginable. "Lovelier detail was never wrought by hands of man". With kind regards A.G.C."
