Pope County, Arkansas: The Pope County Library System has scheduled several speakers in Dover and Russellville during the month of June. Dover Public Library will feature a series of special guests every week at 10:00 am Storytime on Mondays, including Mollie Mason from Lake Dardanelle State Park; Chief Jim Davis of the Chickamauga Cherokee Tribe; child author Dawson Stolzer; and local author Kellie Van Es. Dover Assistant Branch Manager, Kim Tise, who booked the guests to tie in with the Summer Reading Program theme says, “Culture and traditions help us to Color Our World.”
Adults are invited to visit the Pope County Library in Russellville on Thursday, June 5, at 5:30 pm, as the Genealogy Department welcomes Dr. Gayle Seymour, professor of Art History at the University of Central Arkansas. Dr. Seymour’s talk, Art Behind Barbed Wire: Japanese American Internment Art in Arkansas, will explore the resilience and creativity of Japanese Americans interned during World War II. Focusing on the Rohwer and Jerome camps, the presentation will delve into artwork created under duress—drawings, crafts, and visual expressions that reveal both personal stories and communal resistance.
On Thursday, June 19, at 5:30 pm, the Genealogy Department hosts genealogist Russell P. Baker for a Zoom talk entitled The Blue and the Grey: Researching Your Civil War Ancestors. The records of military service and service pensions created during and after the Civil War often contain a goldmine of American genealogical and family history information. In addition, the Genealogy Department offers a vast collection of materials related to the Civil War for those interested in researching this period in history.
