"Canyon Diablo is a gash in the level plain 540 feet wide and 222 feet deep and is crossed by a steel bridge 600 feet long. It has the appearance of a volcanic rent in the earth's crust. Through the notch at the bottom a thread of stream trickles. The name is Spanish for Devil's Canyon."
