Russellville, Arkansas: On Thursday, March 20, at 5:30 pm, Heather Reinold, Manager of Archival Collections and Digital Access at the Arkansas State Archives, and Archival Assistant Wes Oliver will speak at the Pope County Library in Russellville about methods for digitally preserving photographs and documents. From digitizing local newspapers and yearbooks to important family documents, this process allows individuals and institutions to preserve their documents for the future, centralize their collection, and keep their documentation secure.
Digital preservation has allowed the Pope County Library Genealogy Department to include a virtual exhibit on their website featuring several collections of local memorabilia--the Wilson C. N. King Store Collection; the May Russell Postcard Collection; the Alsa Chester Howard Postcard Collection; and the Russellville Photograph Collection. The virtual exhibit makes these collections available for viewing to the public any time at https://popelibrary.org/virtual-exhibit/. (The Russellville Photograph Collection currently resides at Main Street Russellville, 320 W. C Street, for those who wish to view it in person.)
The Arkansas State Archives was originally created as the Arkansas History Commission (AHC) by the Arkansas General Assembly in 1905 to serve as the official archives of the state. Since then, the Arkansas State Archives has been responsible for collecting and preserving official records and historical materials for the State of Arkansas. They maintain the Arkansas State Newspaper Project, Digitized County Records, Maps, and Ephemera, as well as Audio Collections and an Artifact Collection.
