Russellville, Arkansas: On Thursday, May 1, at 5:30 pm, Amy Milliken, Outreach Education Coordinator for the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP), will present
a talk covering the start of World War II, as well as the causes and results of Japanese internment during the war, especially at the Rohwer Japanese American Relocation Center in Desha County between 1942 and 1945. Over 8000 individuals were interred at the center during this period. Due to the sensitive nature of this subject, the library requests that only those 18 and older attend.
Amy Milliken has been the AHPP Education Coordinator since 2016. In this position, she gives presentations to 3rd through 12th grade classes, homeschool groups, scout troops and other organizations. Milliken also served in the classroom for 12 years teaching world history and geography. Prior to teaching, she worked in public history at the Old State House Museum. Her position with AHPP combines her first 2 career paths, public history and education.
In June, Dr. Gayle Seymour from University of Central Arkansas will follow up with a presentation about the art done by Japanese-American citizens of the United States while they were interred in Rohwer and Jerome, Arkansas, during WWII.
